Falling Off the Writing Wagon
I'm not sure when it happened precisely, but I seem to have fallen off the writing wagon.
Oops.
It's not the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last, I know. I've been writing for a very, very long time. Honestly, it's probably been longer than most of you who are reading this have even been alive. So I'm no stranger to losing my oomph now and again. Hell, I'm sure that all of you aren't unfamiliar with the loss of momentum in that department as well.
It happens.
To be honest, I'm glad to have realized that I'm in one of my non-productive periods, because it means that I can fall back on an old solution of mine to help me get back on track again. A fair while back, when I first realized that sometimes I just ran out of effortless steam when it came to getting the words down, I set up a method for putting my brain back into the swing of things: a writing schedule. It intentionally puts me into a mental space designed to feel like I'm back in school, not necessarily with due dates or any of that, but with a pre-determined set of what to write, and when to do it. I have set aside each day of the month for a particular sort of writing, for when I am stuck. Some days are for short stories. Some are for blog posts. Some are for this. Some are for that.
For example, today is a day that I have told myself to work on my novel, so that's what I'm going to be doing (yes, yes, I know I'm also writing a blog post; while the days are assigned certain topics, the entire process isn't set in stone, in case I am feeling fine without needing a direction for the day; don't harsh my buzz, man).
It's hard sometimes, juggling life and creativity, and this is a way that I've found to help me get back in gear now and again, when I need a bop on the head to get myself back on the writing track. No fuss. No muss.
If you've got a method for climbing out of your low creative spots, I'd love to know what it is. I'm always looking out for better ways of making things. Feel free to drop me a line at the contact button below and pass along your wisdom!
Carry on, folks.
