Radio, Radio
I’ve been feeling a little disconnected in a weird way from music lately, which is kind of odd, considering that I am almost always playing something during the day. I’m a huge music fan, always have been, and I think that in this world of buffet all-you-can-eat streaming services, that might be part of why I’m getting a little detached from what I’m hearing at any given moment.
Here’s the thing: over the years I’ve put together a simply massive library of songs (collected from both my own CD collection and the streaming library), currently running over 18,000 tracks, and so the impulse to just hit shuffle and go has sort of become my default setting.
And so there’s the problem: I’m playing music, but I’m not feeling like I’m living with it, not like I used to in ye olden times, in the dark ages of physical media. I’ve grown used to having music just tossed at me as audio wallpaper, and not being actively involved with what I’m hearing.
So I’m trying a new thing, which is really an old thing, as a way to get involved again in music in a way I haven’t in a long time. I’m setting aside time to purposefully listen to entire albums, like we all did in the past, pre-streaming and pre-iTunes and pre-mp3s (although I’m still doing it via streaming, for the sake of convenience). I want to get back into the vibe of an album as opposed to just random songs tossed at my ears.
So for today, I’m grabbing a super oldie but goodie from the shelf: Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I know this one back-to-front from having heard it a million times, so it’s a good place to start my little dive back into album listening. If you haven’t heard it, you should. It’s prime Elton at the height of his creative output, early ‘70s rock, and a piece of magic. I always point to it as an example of solid production, with presence and layers and oopmh. I’m super happy to be hearing it in its entirety again.
I’ll let you guys know how this little project of mine is going, just for fun. Happy listening, friends.
(Also, I’m always looking for new stuff, so if you’ve got any cool music recommendations for me, pop me an email and let me know! I’m a music junkie, people!)
