A (Hopefully) Graceful Slide Into Next Year

Typewriter

I’m not one who ever makes New Year’s resolutions. Picking a date and announcing all the Great Things I Shall Endeavor to Accomplish in the New Year has historically been a recipe for failure, and so I’ve learned over time to just shut up about it and keep my head down when the resolutions start flying.

But you know, if some major changes are being made and they happen to coincide with the turning of the calendar page… well shit. Guess I’m making some resolutions, goddamnit.

The biggest one is health related. Without getting into the boring details, it’s basically one of those “improving my diet and exercise” sorts of things. A doctor-ordered resolution, because I’m not as young as I used to be. This is one that I’ve been trying to ramp up into over the past few weeks, but this time of year makes it difficult to just dive fully into lifestyle change, hence my deciding to just kind of push it a couple of weeks until the holiday madness of my job settles down just a bit. 2025 is the year of me learning that holiday season in the post office is really very similar to my ancient Christmas days working at a mall during my college years. ‘Tis the season and all.

I’m also hoping to get a little artistic flow going again in 2026. It’s been a difficult year for creative endeavors for me, for all sorts of reasons that aren’t worth going over here, but with any luck (and with the recent removal of some life stressors), my creative energy will be humming along again. I know you all know what I’m talking about when all of waves hands at the entirety of the universe just gobbles up all your juice, right?

Stupid lack of juice.

I also think that the time of year has really affected me this time around. Living up in Maine in winter means that sunset is hitting right now at about four in the afternoon, and boy does it just break your brain when it gets dark so fast. This is the first time I’ve seriously thought about getting some of those daylight-mimicking lamps to put up around the house. It’s hard to rise to the challenge of just about anything when it’s dark so damn often.

We’ve also just had our first sort-of-real snowfall of the season, which isn’t really that big in the grand scheme of things really. It’s still coming down as I’m writing this, adding to what I think was about six or eight inches while I was shoveling a path to the chicken coop this morning before work, but it could be much worse honestly. The snow is light and fluffy, so shoveling wasn’t that arduous, and the wind isn’t blowing very much, so I will count that as a win. We’re doing a Christmas road trip tomorrow to visit relatives, but this snow is supposed to taper off in a few more hours, so tomorrow should be fairly clear for us (cross your fingers, please).

Anyway, got off track there.

Resolutions: don’t like ‘em, don’t make ‘em, going to pretend that my plans for the New Year aren’t able to be classified as ‘em.

Hang in there, gang. Let’s see if 2026 is any improvement over 2025.
