Bird Stories

There were ducklings waiting for me when I arrived the other morning at the office where I was beginning my work day. They were in a box stacked atop the morning’s delivered mail. This is not an infrequent event out here in the woods. Usually it’s chicks that come through, but occasionally it is ducklings, sometimes ladybugs, once in a while bees. I haven’t had any dead birds in the boxes that come through, but I’ve heard this sometimes happens. I believe all of these plucky little things were still kicking.
My fear is that they will linger and not be picked up, but these birds were gathered up ten minutes after I called the recipient to let them know the flock had landed. I always appreciate when people are expedient about picking up their live creatures in the post.
On the subject of birds, we have a small flock of chickens at home, and last night as I was collecting eggs, I also collected a poopie prize: one of them crapped on my head while I was grabbing an egg from beneath their roosting poles. That was wet and horrifying and the feeling of it sliding down my neck and under the collar of my shirt was nightmarish, and not something I recommend to anyone. One star, would not do again. It was definitely a rinse-lather-repeat shampoo shower, which is of course immediately where I went after getting back inside the house.
This was certainly not a life changing horror, but still. Blerp.
