Happy New Year and Stuff

Typewriter

Well, Happy New Year and stuff. Hope none of you stayed up too late last night, doing that celebratory thing that results in hangovers and regrets the next morning. You know who are you if you did. No judgment from me, promise.

It’s snowing here in Stephen King Country as I write this, a little blanket to cover the ice that built up during a storm a few days ago. It’s an ice rink outside, and I have to do the Curly Shuffle every time I go to care for the chickens (Curly Shuffle: look it up if you don’t know what I’m talking about). Could be much worse though. We haven’t had more than a foot or so of snow so far, and the winds haven’t been too brutal here where we are. No power outages, which is the important part to us. We have a generator, but we much prefer not to use it if we don’t have to.

Today is the day where I have decided to start cleaning up my digital spaces a bit. Things have gotten far too messy around here. My computer desktop is a terrible mess, littered with folders full of documents I don’t need anymore, and art pieces dropped willy nilly here and there. It’s a godawful mess, and I’ve started organizing into folders on external drives, and tossing old things into the trash. I also need to find a new desktop image to use, as the (forced) update to Windows 11 blew out my old one somehow (because Windows mostly always sucks; the last version I found useful was 3.1, a million and a half years ago).

After the desktop cleansing, I’m going to start working on getting this blog in order. A little dusting, a little reorganizing. Even though I’m not really using my Wordpress blog for much right now, I’m thinking of keeping my images hosted over there, since Bear’s kind of not the best for dealing with anything more than an image or two here and there. No offense to Bear at all, because I’m very fond of it, but it seems much easier to just link to an image offsite than to try to do anything much with them over here. It’s all good. Things come together as they will.

Also on the list of digital-to-do is to get my email in order. I don’t know about all of you, but over the years I have accumulated several email addresses that I use for different things, and all of them have gotten out of hand. Upon checking my phone, I see that amongst all the accounts, I have nearly 71,000 unread messages.

Ahem.

Now, to be fair, I’ve had several of these accounts for twenty years or more now, and the unread messages are generally years and years worth of junk and spam. If an email come from a human being, I do open them up and read them. It’s just all the junk keeps coming in, no matter what your spam filters try to do. So yeah, this is the year that I’m going to try to do some heavy deleting. This is unreasonable, and also kind of daunting. I’ll be doing bite-sized cleanup on that stuff as I go. It’s not an emergency, so a gradual cleaning is definitely a thing to undertake.

I’m going to include some CD ripping under my digital umbrella this year as well. I have a lot of CDs, and more than a few of them are things that aren’t on streaming channels. Over the years I’ve been ripping them and making digital backups, and since I use Apple Music for my streaming, all of the stuff that I rip is available there on the service for me to stream. It’s fun to rediscover albums I’ve forgotten about, and I am a big fan of just shuffling my entire library and seeing what comes up. I’m not going to make any hard deadline for getting the rest of my discs ripped, because that’s just silly. But I’m going to keep plodding along with them, and eventually I’ll be all caught up. Hopefully. Maybe. Possibly.

Optimism is a thing I’m trying this year.

Sort of under the digital umbrella as well is getting some of my art printed out to put up around the house. I’ve got a bazillion things in my files, but I haven’t really gotten many of them up on the walls. This is going to be something happening in 2026. It’s long past time.

What about you folks? Plans? Hopes? Conspiracies? Ancient rituals? Deals with the devil?

Thanks for being around, fellow weirdos.

Carry on with your bad selves.
