Proof of Life (Sort of)

Typewriter

Has it really been nearly two months since I last posted? Apparently so! I hadn’t meant to be gone so long, but you know how it gets sometimes.

It is finally springtime here in Stephen King Country, meaning breezy and rainy, the air full of allergens. The past few days I’ve been feeling the pollen in my itchy eyes, and my stuffy nose. I have a memory like a goldfish for that, always forgetting how my allergies irritate me once the flowers begin to bloom. Jerks.

Speaking of jerks, so far the black flies haven’t been particularly noticeable. Last year at this time, we were wearing netting over our heads when we went outside to keep the little buggers off our faces and out of our ears and noses and eyes, but this year so far we’ve been in the clear. Maybe the long cold winter put a damper on them this year. Maybe they’re saving it all up for an assault in June. I’ll be sure to keep you informed as time goes by.

We inherited a new flock of hens to add to our depleted one (depleted mostly through predators and random who-knows-what-happened chicken exits; in our experience so far, chickens either are immortal or drop dead for no specific reason), which puts us at fifteen birds right now. We had a sixteenth, a black hen, but she was insane and went feral, refusing to hang with the flock or even go into the coop at night. She was living in the woods like a feathered Sasquatch on her own, and we’d only catch sight of her once in a while, crossing the driveway, drinking from the stream by the house. It’s been a couple of weeks now since we last saw her, and though she in theory could still be alive out there, at this point we are more inclined to believe that she has done a full rotation in the circle of life. She is probably now more legend than chicken.

I have been doing much reading recently, in bed at night mostly. Some rereads of books I haven’t read in years (Hyperion by Dan Simmons, some Richard Matheson titles, some James Herbert), some new (King Sorrow by Joe Hill), a little from column A, a little from column B. All of it’s been in the category of “comfort reading,” because I haven’t been much in the mood for heavy things right now. I’ve nearly completely stopped following the news, and I’ve been about 99% off of any social media. It’s been a good thing for my brain. I encourage everyone to get the hell off the Internet now and again. Your mind and soul can use the recharge.

I promise not to stay too deep in the holes right now, but I have have reinstalled both Skyrim and Civilization on my laptop, and both are notable time sink games. I am being responsible with my time in them though, or at least I think I am. According to Steam it’s been a couple of years since I played either one, so I think I’m allowed to start in again for a little while, for old time’s sake.

I owe some of you emails. Eep.

How is everyone doing out there?
