Proof of Life
It’s gray out today, slightly humid, but thankfully this has been a cooler week than the last. I am not a fan of heat, the sticky kind especially. Unfortunately I live in a world where it’s only going to keep getting hotter, because capitalism, so that’s fun. Fun for all of us, of course, not just me, but ya know.
Fun times.
I am eating my lunch today in the park across the street from work, because I am solidly in a burnout phase right now, and needed to get out of the building for a few minutes. I am finding myself easily irritated by the people coming in wanting things, which is another burnout sign. I’m sure it’ll pass eventually, but for right now, stabby is my default setting.
Currently reading: Dead and Dreaming of Electric Sheep by Paul Tremblay. Tremblay is one of my favorite authors in the genre that I call “what the hell am I reading?” He is endlessly inventive and very good at setting up what you think is going to happen, and then spinning it off into a completely different direction. Always a fan.
Currently obsessively playing: Grand Theft Auto Online, which I know isn’t new or probably particularly cool at this point, since it was released in 2013, but that’s me: always behind the curve. To be fair, I did play it on its original Xbox release back then and had a lot of fun with it, but I haven’t turned the Xbox on in about five years and I’ve become a PC game player since then. I was feeling nostalgic not long ago and so picked up a copy of GTA for $15 for my laptop, and have been happily running people over in the streets for a couple of weeks. There has been a lot of content added in the years since I last played the game, and while it’s all mostly just variations on the same “murder for profit” theme, it’s still vastly entertaining in a criminal element kind of way. I was pleased to see the addition of animals to the game, so not only can I wander around and look at cats and dogs and deer, I can also be mauled by mountain lions while I’m watching the sunset over the mountains, if I’m not careful.
Again, fun times.
I am not much of an online gamer. I don’t really enjoy playing with other people very much, not really. I don’t like wearing or using headsets, and I’m not a gamer gamer, not really. For example, I’m generally happy just wandering these sandbox games and looking at the scenery, which doesn’t really line up with most gamers, who want to do missions and (especially in this game) troll other players and generally make their game lives more difficult. My solution here is to start a private server and just play by myself. No stress, no mess, no pressure. I can just poke around the game world and grab screenshots of pretty sunsets or weird bugs like people with hands for heads, that kind of thing. I love a good programming bug.
